Phil Wilson, the Labour parliamentary candidate for Sedgefield, says Nigel Farage should sack the UKIP candidate for his disgusting and obscene comments.
UKIP’s candidate for Sedgefield John Leathley posted comments online about the British Muslim journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. The comments were made on 20 November 2014 while Ms Alibhai-Brown was speaking on Question Time.
Mr Leathley said the journalist “needs a shag”, sex with her could be “practice” and she “would love a big black thing up her a***”.
Ms Alibhai-Brown has been quoted saying his remarks are “absolutely appalling”.
Leathley has since “apologised unreservedly” for his remarks saying he was “shocked and am appalled and deeply ashamed of my words. I am very sorry and regret deeply being so coarse, it is out of character but no more excusable for that”.
Ms Alibhai-Brown told the Mirror Online that “I saw the apology and of course I’m not going to give any credence to it at all. You don’t apologise because you are found out”.
Phil Wilson says: “Not only has the UKIP candidate shown contempt for the people of Sedgefield by contesting two seats on the same day by running here and in Stockton, his comments about Yasmin Alibhai-Brown are disgusting and obscene.
“Nigel Farage should sack him as the UKIP candidate for Sedgefield and should say so now. This UKIP candidate joins a long list not suited to represent people in Parliament”.
Paul Trippett, Wilson’s agent, says “in 40 years of fighting elections, I have never come across a more odious candidate than UKIP’s Sedgefield candidate, John Leathley”.
