I am trying to trace my husband’s family tree but have a missing link. His mother was Jesse Corner  b 1908 who grew up in Trimdon and I have managed to trace nearly all her brothers and sisters, but cannot find out what happened to brother Stanley Corner. Does anyone out there know where he disappeared to, or into which hospital or home he ended up in? Many thanks, Gill

I am researching the history of White Hurworth farm and any connection it may have had with an Ambrose Heighington who lived at White Hurworth ca 1680.  He married the daughter of Sir Edward Musgrave of Hayton Castle, Cumberland. He had four children including two sons I think, one called Musgrave, the other William. Musgrave went on to become organist at St Nicholas, Gt Yarmouth in 1733. His brother, William was a commoner at Queen’s College, Oxford.
Thanks, Andrew Hayden

In reply to the enquiry of Ambrose Heighington re White Hurworth in 1600s, check with north country diaries ebook north, it was the wife Frances Heighington who purchased the White Hurworth land in 1656, her hubby died in 1893, Nov 11th, Musgrove was the son of Ambrose and was into organ music etc. Got the dates etc if you would like to send me email and I will send all info I have.

Chaytor Ancestors:  I was looking into my grandmothers family and was happy to find more information than I ever expected.  However,  I have information regarding Anne Chaytor Barber who left for the US approximately in 1913.  She was a twin and left with three children – Nancy, Frederick and Emily.  My mom, Elizabeth, was born in Illinois in 1915.  She passed away in 2010.  I am very interested in learning more about the Chaytor and Barber families.  Thank you,  Darlene Hammond

Hi, I am descended from the Ortons of Trimdon, who lived in North Plantation Row and Surgery Row in the early part of the last century. Families who married into the Ortons were:
Richardsons; Welchs’; and Soulsbys’.
This photo (click to open) is from the booklet Where Explosions; the chap on the extreme left I am convinced is an Orton. Perhaps someone can help to identify him?
Any relatives up there feel free to get in touch!  Thanks, Mark Orton mark.orton@mypostoffice.co.uk

I live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S. My great, great, grandfather, Thomas Paisley, according to the 1861 Census in England,  was born in Blesck Green, Durham, England in 1832.  Civil Parish was Trimdon in Durham. He married Jane Elizabeth Bowen in 1856; my guess at a church in Trimdon. Thomas, his wife, and son, John Thomas, age 1, emigrated to the U.S. in 1863. I  know this is a long-shot, but if you are a Paisley or a Bowen or know someone with that surname, please contact me.

I am looking for anyone who might be doing family research on the SIMPSON or FARMER families.
Clara SIMPSON b 12 Oct 1895 Kelloe Winning DURHAM (father James SIMPSON,  mother Sarah Armstrong). I believe Clara to be the youngest of about 12 children – her father James was a Colliery fireman.
Clara qualified as a teacher at Ripon Training College. She married John William FARMER  (father Noah, mother Margaret) at St Pauls  Deaf Hill cum Langdale Co Dur in 1922. She taught at Trimdon Grange.
The couple emigrated to Australia in 1926 where Clara worked as a teacher and John worked as a Clerk in Sydney. John died in 1974 and Clara died 1984/5.
Clara was also known as Jenny . A niece Emily Harrison who lived at Wingate communicated regularly. Also Emily’s granddaughter Kay who used to correspond with her Aunt Jenny.  If anyone knows of any descendants of these families still in the Durham area. I would like to make contact, especially with Kay. Cheers

Hi, I am working on my family tree, and have been for a few years.
With the exception of myself and my father, all previous generations from my grandad backwards came from the Trimdon area.
My grandfather Robert Orton 1912-1990, was born at 9 North Plantation, and before leaving the area sometime in the 30’s, worked for a short time at Fishburn Colliery.
His father, also Robert, 1877-1950, was under manager, then manager at one of the Trimdon Collieries I was always told, though he started as a hewer.
His father Joseph 1853-1933, was also a mine manager and he lived in a place called Surgery Row.
I am guessing that there must be cousins I have never met still in the area, as I was always told that Orton is a bit like Smith in that part of the world. I would be so interested if anyone has any info either on any members of my Trimdon family, or indeed, what life must have been like for my grandad in Trimdon in 1930 (when he turned 18) in the mining trade. I knew him well but he never really spoke about that time.
I wonder also what the life of my great grandad, initially a hewer must have been like, and what the plantation was like- my dad who is 69 this year can just remember it as a boy, and said it was a grid system of houses for mining workers, built around the collieries themselves.
I guess it has something to do with trying to understand your roots.
Anyway thanks in advance,
Mark Orton, Norfolk  Email: mark.orton@hotmail.co.uk
