Title: Trimdon Deeds
Dates of creation: 1718-1873
Extent: 35 items
Held by: Durham University Library, Archives and Special Collections
Origination: deeds relating to four tenements in Trimdon, Co. Durham.
Language: English
Contents
35 documents relating to four adjoining tenements on the north side of Town Street (Front Street), Trimdon, Co. Durham.
The tenements were all held on long leases for 999 or 1,000 years. Three of them were granted by the Wharton family of Gilling, Yorkshire, at the beginning of the 17th century (viz.) to:
Robert and Bryan Jackson (1615),Thomas Helcoate (1616) and to Peter Lister (1623)
The earliest deed relating to the last tenement along in the group is from 1800, where it is described as a piece of ground 60 yards by 16 yards, where a messuage recently stood.
By 1795 the Jackson tenement had been divided into three and references in the deeds to “newly erected dwelling houses” suggest that others may have been divided also. The four tenements do not therefore correspond to Nos. 1 – 4 Front Street. However, endorsements on No. 29 (dated 1954 and 1955) show that both Nos. 1 and 4 Front Street stood on these sites.
The Jackson and Helcoate tenements were purchased by Paul Watson of Trimdon, blacksmith, in the mid 18th century, and sold to John Robinson of Sheraton, yeoman, separately in 1795 and 1800. Later all four tenements were acquired by Robert Beadnell of Trimdon, cartwright. He purchased the Lister tenement in 1841 and the others in 1851. The series ends with the purchase of all four tenements by John Michael Walker of Trimdon Colliery, grocer, in 1872 and 1873.
