Telephone Scams
Scammers at it again in our area, don’t let them ruin you. Every year, thousands of people lose money to telephone scams – for a few it is their entire life savings. Scammers will say anything to cheat people out of money. Their approach is very friendly and familiar calling you by your first name, making small talk and asking about your family. They may claim to work for a company you trust – they will do anything to convince you.

Today in Seaham one of our elderly ladies was called by someone claiming they had won some money. In order to receive this money the elderly person would need to bring personal documents including a passport and then they would send a courier to escort her to the bank where she would have to withdraw £270 in order for them to release the cheque. This lady agreed to do so and once they hung up she rang the police.

Not everyone is as tuned in as this. Please be aware and make your friends and family aware these people are rogues and need to be avoided.
If you have any information on this please call Durham Police on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800555111.
