Communities from Trimdon are set for a healthy 2006 as work begins on improving fantastic sports facilities in their neighbourhood. Trimdon Colliery Community Centre has received £50,000 funding from Barclays Spaces for Sports, a new three-year £30m community sponsorship programme, to create and improve sports facilities in communities across the UK.
The programme is a partnership between Barclays, Groundwork and the Football Foundation. Karen Swainston, Barclays Head of Community Relations for the North East, said, “Barclays Spaces for Sports will create and improve hundreds of new sports sites up and down the country. Our aim is to have a significant and long-lasting impact on local communities and grassroots sport throughout the UK for many years to come. ”Local residents will be working with environmental charity Groundwork East Durham and Sedgefield Borough Council Sports Development team to create a multi use games area at the Trimdon Colliery Community Centre for the local community. Not only will the project encourage people to take up sport and improve their health, it will also bring people together and strengthen community spirit. The project will work to ensure long term activity on the facilities and will provide kit and equipment to encourage residents to take part and get the most out of the new facilities. Stephen Armstrong, Groundwork, East Durham said “Our experience shows that people really value the opportunity to have a say in improving our neighbourhoods and make them better places to live, work and play. Getting involved in these projects gives people confidence and makes us all feel proud of where we live.”

CRIME PREVENTION Crime in the Trimdons remains low, however we could all do something to reduce the crime even more. Over recent months it has become apparent that some of these crimes could have been prevented by simple measures, such as keeping all exterior doors locked at all times of the day and property such as bikes, garden furniture etc put into secured garages and sheds. Now the darker nights are approaching use interior and exterior lights as a preventative measure and also those who have house alarms always use them. Also do not leave any valuables on display in your vehicles. These may appear straight forward pieces of advice but having attended crimes recently it appears that if some of these recommendations had been used, then the crime would not have occurred. If anyone has any information regarding crimes that have occurred please contact me. If you wish to remain anonymous then all information will be treated in the strictest of confidence. Alternatively if you have witnessed a crime and have concerns regarding going to court there are several special court measures for witnesses that our witness care teams can assist you with. Can everyone be aware of traders/tradesman going door to door. There has been numerous offences in the force area which are known as bogus officials offences. Persons will attend an address and make out for example they are from the water board and need to check your water. One person will distract the householder whilst the other searches the address for cash or other valuables. One recent incident in the village involved a bogus roofing company carrying out work and then using ladders to gain access via a window to enter the house next door to where they were working and take some cash. If you do have workmen, try and make sure they are recommended and you have contact details, names etc for the tradesmen. If you are unsure about anyone going door to door contact the police and do not allow them into your home. If you require any advice please contact me on 0845 60 60 365 or attend one of my local beat surgeries in the Trimdons.
