In October 2005, the children and teenagers from the top of the bank worked tirelessly making a small garden in our playing field. With the help of Skerne Play Park Committee and a group of volunteers they

* Cleared an area that was predominantly used for ‘fly tipping’ and overrun with nettles and weeds plus roles of barbed wire, car engines, builder’s rubble, mattresses and broken glass.
* Helped to remove all of this in a wheelbarrow to Burn Oval and put it in a skip
* Dug in over a ton of compost, and then planted the garden with a small tree, shrubs, plants and lots of bulbs.

At this The end result is fantastic and the community now have an attractive area rather than the ‘eye sore’ which was there. All the children and teenagers involved in this stage of the project can be extremely proud of themselves – as we know their parents and grandparents are!
At this present time the playing field’s entrance has a locked gate, to allow the field to be decontaminated from dog faeces before the development takes place.

Funding has been secured for the multi-user games area and we are hoping that this – and the toddler play area - will be installed in time for the summer holidays but this depends on how successful our current funding applications are.
However, we are still working on Phase 2 of the project (the junior play area) which may have to be put in at a later date. As advised by the Borough Council we have applied for planning permission as a measure of good practice and this was granted on 3 February 2006.

We are holding two events and the money raised will go towards the play park development.

1. On 7 April 2006 we are holding a Charity Night in the Labour Club when there will be:
A quiz with prizes, entertainment by Phil and Des,
a finger buffet and a raffle    Tickets £3 each

2. On 15 April we are holding an Easter event in the playing field from 2.00pm – 4.00 pm There will be lots of stalls and fun things for the children to do.

picPlease come along and support these events. Just a reminder that there are no parking facilities at the top of the bank.
We have so far raised over £5,000 from holding community events and donations from local organisations and businesses. Thank you for your support – you are all helping us to achieve our objective, which is to offer the children a choice of somewhere to play other than on the roads.
