HEAP BIG COMPOST
Shoppers are invited to pick up a pile of compost with their weekly shop in County Durham. Stockpiles of compost made from garden waste collected from kerbside recycling and waste recycling centres is being given away free in a Big Heap Roadshow organised by Durham County Council. It’s part of the County Durham and Darlington initiative to encourage home composting which includes offering residents an opportunity to try out home composters at vastly reduced prices.
The County Durham Waste Partnership, Premier Waste and Teesdale Conservation Volunteers will be giving away the compost at various locations in the County. People are encouraged to take up to three bags per person. Volunteers will bag the compost and help take it to shoppers vehicles.
County Councillor Brian Myers, Cabinet member for waste management, said: “Last year’s promotion encouraged almost 20,000 residents to start home composting, making a significant reduction in the amount of organic waste that was sent to landfill sites, but there is still more that can be done. The aim of the initiative is to show residents what compost looks and feels like and demonstrate how easy it is to produce using a home composter. We will also be giving people information on the new home compost scheme and a home compost advisor will be on hand to answer any compost related questions”.
Home compost bins are available at reduced prices by telephoning 0845 077 0757 or visiting www.recyclenow.com/compost.
A 220 litre bin is available at £4.00 instead of nearly £40.00, a 330 litre bin is £6.00 instead of nearly £50.00 and a 700 litre bin is £20.00 instead of over £100.00.
