Voluntary and community organisations across Sedgefield Borough took part in an Equality and Diversity Event organised by CAVOS, at Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College.
foodforthoughtYoung people and adults got together in their choice of workshops and explored equality issues around age, disability, sexual orientation, race and religion.
The programme provided something for everyone: presentations, information stands and networking. A crèche was provided for babies and toddlers.
Food and entertainment were special highlights of the day. Participants sampled a selection of cuisine from seven different countries. Later they took part in a workshop conducted by Navrang Arts, a two-sister partnership, who demonstrated movements from Bollywood dance. Men, women and children joined in before sitting down to enjoy a performance of Indian dance.
Sylvia Rochester, Training Officer for CAVOS, commented on the success of the day saying, “We were delighted with attendance. All age groups and a good range of community interests were represented. Attendees said they had come away with a better understanding of other people’s views. We are really encouraged by the positive reaction we had to the day’s activities and we look forward to arranging our next community event.”

The Ferryhill Lakes and District Development, Education, and Resource Centre (‘L.A.D.D.E.R Centre’) is a community facility based in the heart of the Lakes Estate. Alyson Learmonth, Director of Public Health at Sedgefield PCT is pictured sixth from right.

The centre was conceived and developed by local people in response to the many health issues arising in the local community, particularly around children and young people. For example, there was a high incidence of drug and alcohol addiction within the community and residents were concerned with the impact not just on the sufferers but also the basic healthcare and health education of the local children and young people.
