Cavos puts Sedgefield Borough on the map!

Cavos is the representative for the Voluntary and Community sector in Sedgefield Borough. Cavos
provides support, guidance, training and information for new and existing organisations on a wide range of topics including funding, governance, best practice and policy development. Cavos also acts as the umbrella organisation for promoting volunteering opportunities throughout the borough.
Earlier this year Cavos was awarded Neighbourhood Renewal Funds from Sedgefield Borough’s Local Strategic Partnership, to carry out a survey of community and voluntary activity throughout the whole of the area.
Over the coming months volunteers will be contacting groups to find out more about where they are and what they do. The information gathered will be input into a database and eventually produced in a local directory

A spokesperson from CAVOS said, “We need to know more about the valuable work that is being undertaken by the voluntary sector in our area. We need to do more to raise awareness with members of the public and with organisations such as local authorities and health authorities. We have voluntary groups in our community that work with young people, older people and much more. We have theatre groups, arts groups, history groups – the list is endless. I am sure that there are groups out there that we do not know about, but through our survey we hope to identify them, find out more about them and of equal importance, find out how Cavos can help them to develop and grow.”
Sedgefield Borough covers an area that extends from Shildon in the West to Sedgefield in the East, Ferryhill to the North, and Newton Aycliffe to the South. At the moment Cavos has only two volunteers to map the entire range of

voluntary activity in the area. What they desperately need are additional volunteers to help with the survey.
They would work alongside existing volunteers to carry out visits to voluntary and community groups to collect information for inclusion in the survey. They would receive full training and ongoing support from the project co-ordinator. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone wanting to increase their skills and experience working in a new field. Travel and lunch expenses would be reimbursed.
So – if you have a few hours to spare each week and would like to be involved in this exciting new venture, please contact Cavos on 01388 811 115 and ask for Freda or Sharon to find out how you can help to put Sedgefield Borough on the map

SOUTH DURHAM GYMNASTICS CLUB

Nine-year-old Beth is a member of the South Durham Gymnastics Club, which is based at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.
The gym club has recently moved into a purpose-built gym. A lottery grant and Sedgefield Borough Council made this move possibly. These fantastic new facilities will give the gymnasts every chance to reach their full potential and hopefully one day produce a Commonwealth or Olympic champion.
Beth trains for 22 hours each week, mostly after school hours but recently she has been given permission by Trimdon Junior School to do extra training.

The school is very supportive allowing Beth to attend national and international competitions.
Beth competed at the Alpha Factor UK Invitational, on 9th September. Beth also competed in the North of England Level 3 Voluntary Championships in Newcastle on 24th September.
Beth travelled to Mons in Belgium on 30th September to compete in the Dou Dou Gym Cup. This was her first international competition. She was competing as an individual for South Durham, but upon arrival was asked to make up a team also comprising of team-mate Kelsey Garbutt and two girls from the Czech Republic.

Beth was the overall champion and collected a gold medal and trophy. Her team won the silver medal, and the South Durham Team finished third and collected the bronze medal.
