Speaking of the metaphorical wheel of fortune which lends its name to his new book, 16 year old Adam Luke writes: “Today, almost 20 years after the final rotation: the wheel persist, mounted in the centre of innumerable townships – no longer turning but ever present”. The book charts the incredible history of the Durham Coalfield and draws on the assistance of former miners and present inhabitants alike. “The book does not pretend to be an exhaustive, complete history of the coalfield, but is instead my tribute to an industry which transformed our county and provided us with the traditions, memories and culture which we delight in today.” It is also endorsed by many historical images.
Adam Luke has a love of books and a passion for history. His dream became reality when his first book “Doves, Pigeons and Masonry Bees” was published in March of last year. His new book aptly named “Spinning the Wheel of Fortune” shows Adam’s exploration of history of his beloved County Durham and indeed his roots until he reaches a complete admiration of the sheer importance and influence of the industry countywide. “I wanted to gives something back to the people who support communities such as mine in their quest for regeneration and therefore I felt the best way would be to make a donation to the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation for every copy sold.” The book which is priced at £4.99 will go on sale on March 5th and is available using the order form on this website.
