.Carnival Parade 10 September 2005
The Joint Trimdons Partnership engaged Bravura Arts from Stockton to work with the communities of Trimdon to design & produce costumes for a themed carnival parade based on local myths, heroes & events. Neighbourhood Renewal Funding from Sedgefield Borough Council funded the arts project.
Bravura Arts held a number of costume & music making workshops over several months with community members, a local youth group, library staff as well as children, parents & teachers from schools in Trimdon Station, Trimdon Grange & Trimdon Village.
Approximately 175 children & young people & 70 adults took part in the project with Bravura Arts to produce costumes & music for the carnival parade.
The event was held on the morning of Saturday 10 September to tie in with the Trimdon Festival. The children & young people, dressed in spectacular costumes, made music, danced & paraded around Trimdon Village. There was also a small fair held on the Millennium green with rides & stalls.
The children & young people who were involved in the project completed evaluation forms and their responses overwhelmingly show that they enjoyed taking part in the workshops, felt they had learnt new skills, including how to work as a team, and had great fun taking part in the parade. Two teenagers who took part said they had learnt new skills, which would help them in their future college studies.
Responses received from adults who were involved in the project, not surprisingly were less enthusiastic than those of the children. Some people thought the money would have been better spent on a range of smaller activities spread across the Trimdons rather than just having one large project. Others thought supervising the children & finishing large amounts of costumes without sufficient help from volunteers was hard work & quite stressful. It was also felt that coordination & communication between all parties was sometimes less good than it could have been.
However, many adults felt that they had learnt new skills & that they would use them in the future.
School staff in particular said they had already used costumes & materials from the event in other school based activities. Two schools are planning a joint Festival of Light event in 2006. Overwhelmingly the adults felt that the children had benefited from the workshops & that they had enjoyed taking part in the parade.

CHILDREN IN NEED
Parents, staff and children at Trimdon Village Community Infant and Nursery School,
raised £194 in aid of Children in Need on November 18th by having a non-uniform day
and by covering child-sized ‘Pudsey Bear’ pictures with small change.
A brilliant effort, I am sure everyone will agree.
Mrs Helen McRae (Acting Headteacher)
