I am searching for information about my Great, Great Uncle Aaron Barratt and his wife Maria (nee Attwood), on 1911 census they lived at Jasper House, Deaf Hill, Trimdon. After spending almost 50 years in Australia they returned to Trimdon in 1959, where Aaron died in 1960. Their nephew, S Cairns is named on the death certificate, is there anyone still living in Trimdon by that name, I would be most grateful for any information, many thanks Jayne Jones.

Can anyone help? My name is Brian Harvey, and I am trying to research my Mothers past. Her name was Violet Eleanor Newton who was born in Trimdon on the 6/7/1914 and lived at 17 OVERMANS ROW. Her fathers name was Fred Allen Newton Born in Darlington in 1890, and lived in the RISE CARR area. In fact the Newtons lived in that area for more than 40 years prior to the 1911 census. Violets Mothers name was Margaret Mary Ann Robinson Newton, late Ashcroft, formally French. She was born in Minton Durham in 1885, her father being Thomas French. Following the death of Margaret Newton when Violet was quite young, it would appear that father and daughter moved to Hampshire where they spent the rest of their lives.I'm sure there must be a lot of long lost relatives in the Darlington area, so any information that can enlighten the past would be appreciated. Thank you, Brian Harvey on brianrvs@hotmail.com

I am researching the history of White Hurworth farm and any connection it may have had with an Ambrose Heighington who lived at White Hurworth ca 1680. He married the daughter of Sir Edward Musgrave of Hayton Castle, Cumberland. He had four children including two sons I think, one called Musgrave, the other William. Musgrave went on to become organist at St Nicholas, Gt Yarmouth in 1733. His brother, William was a commoner at Queen's College, Oxford. Thanks, Andrew Hayden
Reply from Linda Francis, ghostmistressproductions@googlemail.com In reply to the enquiry of Ambrose Heighington re White Hurworth in 1600s, check with north country diaries ebook north, it was the wife Frances Heighington who purchased the White Hurworth land in 1656, her hubby died in 1893, Nov 11th, Musgrove was the son of Ambrose and was into organ music etc. Got the dates etc if you would like to send me email and I will send all info I have.

Families who married into the Ortons were: Richardsons; Welchs'; and Soulsbys'. Hi, I am working on my family tree, and have been for a few years. With the exception of myself and my father, all previous generations from my grandad backwards came from the Trimdon area. My grandfather Robert Orton 1912-1990, was born at 9 North Plantation, and before leaving the area sometime in the 30's, worked for a short time at Fishburn Colliery. His father, also Robert, 1877-1950, was under manager, then manager at one of the Trimdon Collieries I was always told, though he started as a hewer. His father Joseph 1853-1933, was also a mine manager and he lived in a place called Surgery Row. I am guessing that there must be cousins I have never met still in the area, as I was always told that Orton is a bit like Smith in that part of the world. I would be so interested if anyone has any info either on any members of my Trimdon family, or indeed, what life must have been like for my grandad in Trimdon in 1930 (when he turned 18) in the mining trade. I knew him well but he never really spoke about that time. I wonder also what the life of my great grandad, initially a hewer must have been like, and what the plantation was like- my dad who is 69 this year can just remember it as a boy, and said it was a grid system of houses for mining workers, built around the collieries themselves. I guess it has something to do with trying to understand your roots. Anyway thanks in advance, Mark Orton, Norfolk Email: mark.orton@hotmail.co.uk

I am researching my husband's family history and need information on James Patrick Rookes who was born 1927 in Blackhall, but his father James Rookes was born in 1898 in Trimdon. I know they lived at 35 Cuthbertson Street, Trimdon - I am not able to find the street. James Patrick Rookes was in the army when he got married in 1948. All information will be appreciated. Reply from Danielle Farrell 16 June 2010. I am currently trying to research my grandad who went by the name James Patrick Shaw; however I recently found out that his real name was actually James Partick Rookes; I don’t know if it is the same person but the name is so familiar. He lived in Liverpool, but I am aware that he was originally from West Hartlepool. Even if it is not the right person could you please let me know. Kind regards, Danielle Farrell
Reply from Linda Wilkinson: 14 Jun 2010 I am not 100% sure, but think Cuthbertson Street was the houses that were behind what is now North Moor Avenue
Reply from Harninder K Daly: 12th July 2010 re Danielle Farrell response I would need more information before I could dismiss his grandfather not being the James Patrick Rookes that I am looking for. 1 why did he change his name? 2 when did he move to Liverpool?
Reply from Danielle Farrell 16 July 2010. I have further information to believe he may be the same person. I can confirm that his name was James Partrick Rookes and later went by James Patrick Shaw. He was born in May 1927 in Durham. If you require any additional information please feel free to contact me via my personal email held by Trimdon Times. Kind regards. Danielle - - - -
