Bill, I have never encouraged anyone to use recreational herbs, I do however discourage anyone from usin chemicals. I acknowlage the fact that I am an old hippy and live in a provence that is famous for a certain green crop. As for my spiritual leanings , I try to respect all living things. Bye the way I do belive the bible has a reference to using all of the herbs given by god . Just a thought.

In gathering information on my family, I am trying to find out what happened to Arthur Shorthouse, parents Frederick and Mary (Polly) Cook. Arthur born in 1914 was baptised Trimdon Colliery Primitive Methodist Church. Father Fred was killed in France WW1 1916.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of this family.

George, I thought you said you and Ann were Buddists, how do “recreational herbs” fit in with that philosophy? Promotion of drugs in any form is WRONG!

Just thought I should share this example of how the whole world is related. We have a little African girl who has recently started to come to our martial arts club, she was from Gambia, West Africa, her parents knew editor of the Gambian newspaper our daughter worked for and her aunt owned the book store that Gail did book reviews on, it doesn’t stop there the guy is a professor of medicine at the same university as Gail, there are 12 people from Gambia in the whole of BC , a provence larger than europe . There must be similar stories out there .

One of your readers, was kind enough to send me a site with pictures of the pubs in Trimdon. It’s nice that there are people out there who care for us sometimes home sick ex trimdonites ( is that a word )! Thank you .

I’m going to kick start the funny pub stories, My old buddy from Trimdon will confirm this funny tale. We were working on a construction site, one Monday morning in the “bait” cabin comparing hangovers when one old guy says, ypuve never been drunk till ye’ve sh#t yerself, n’ ave been drunk three times. And then proceeded to relate the said incidences. No doubt there is someone out there can top that one for funny. As is the nature of construction workers the conversation sunk to toilet humor, but thats another story.

Hi Peter, older by three years, so you will confirm the fact you could get a half pint for under a shilling! Also we didn’t abuse the privliege either and if you did and got a smack around the head for it , you took it like the lippy kid you were. A lesson for todays genration. Ther ya go I am sounding like a grumpy old fart again. I read the novel ” The Forest”, ” London ” and “Sarum” , the authors name eludes me ! Some one ought to write an historical novel about the pit villages.

I think i am a little older (58) than you George… but i recall sneaking down to the Wingate Arms thinking we could get a quiet illegal pint(tastes better when you might get caught)on entering the establishment we crawled up to the bar so as not to be noticed…and…from out of the one of the side rooms came the shout “howay in heya” we were not the only ones sneaking a quick half!!! all of our m8ts were too!!oh happy days!!

The message from the teen in Trimdon and the “Dovey” reminded me of what we had for leasure time way back then. The landlord of a local pub ,long gone used to allow us underaged drinkers into the back room. We were allowed one half pint and access to the jukebox as long as we were quiet and well behaved. We had a good night out for a shilling and six pence, thats 7.5 pence
( seriously), and if us young lads got more that a half and then got loud the older boys , 17/18 put us in our place for fear of spoiling a good thing. That was around 1966. now I feel old . Any good pub stories out there !

By pure chance I visited the Trimdon Times website and was amazed to find photographs of my brother George Bradwell from the 60,s when he first went to live in Trimdon. When he married Vera Skelton from Deaf Hill he left Wheatley Hill and went to live next door to his mother in law in Station Row in the Foundry and from there moved to Nottingham in the 70,s to work in Hucknall where he still lives with Vera his wife.My brother was well known in the Trimdon area for his love of dogs and apart from the two in the photos, he had at the same time a greyhound which had a very succesful racing career. The greyhound was called Domino King named because my father was an expert domino player and champion. The dog after breaking a hock was kept as a pet(which was unusual in those days, normally they were destroyed)and went on to live for about 22 years, which was a record at the time for a greyhound

I absolutely love what you have done with the website for Trimdon! Are there any families out there that trace their lineage or allied lines back to anyone of the Maloney families that were living in the area between 1859-1880 or so?
My mother’s family descends from the family of Patrick Maloney and his first wife Winifred McLaughlin. Originally from Ireland they were wed in Trimdon (or possibly Sedgefield as the wedding is in the R.C. registers there) in 1859 and spent the period 1859-1869 in the Trimdon/Trimdon Colliery area. Patrick was, as expected, a miner and he and Winifred had 6 children in Trimdon. In 1999 Patrick’s grandson Regis Maloney shared with me a family story which claims that a mine recruiter from the U.S. named Rube Haggerty paid occasional visits to the Durham coal fields in the 1860s to try and attract miners to Pennsylvania. Patrick accepted and migrated to McKean County, PA in Sep 1869 with his brother John. His second wife, Catherine Murray (married to Patrick in March 1868 at St. Williams), migrated a few months later with the children arriving in Boston Harber in Dec 1869 aboard the SS Marathon out of Liverpool. Patrick was the son of Thomas Maloney – tenant farmer of County Mayo, Ireland. Patrick’s sister Mary also lived in Trimdon and married Michael Glancy there in January 1858. Patrick’s first wife died in 1867 but I’ve not located the cemetery in which she is interred. A recent visit to the cemeteries in Trimdon and Trimdon Colliery have me doubtful that I’ll find an extant headstone (if ever one existed in the first place).
I have a family website on which I display this information at: http://maloney.garrigus-family.com/
Cheers!

Edith and Peter , I held my nose while I read John Burton’s autobiography. I have never met the man but from anecdotal reports I would agree he is pretty rude. Rest assured karma or natural justice will catch up with him and his boss Tony Blair for the crimes against the people of Britain and Iraq.
For the Crimes against Iraq , read the internationally respected jouranist John Pilger, on znet.com or antiwar.com

Hi Edith,Sorry to hear about your meeting with Tonys agent….you should complain to Mr Blair, and then use your vote to show your displeasure should his answer be unsatisfactory… he is no better than any of the rest of us ‘ordinary’ folk and not worthy of his name being mentioned.

Great to see Trimdon on the web; both figuratively and literally. Nice to see up-to-date photos for all of us Ex-Pats.
30 years ago I used to hang out with a group of “ne’r do well’s” including Billy Robson, Peter Anderson, Lynne Jones, Shirley Parnaby and others at the Folk Club. Used to be held at the Red Lion in the Village and was always a good time.
If any of those mentioned check the site, please contact me – would love to hear from you!

I am currently researching my family tree. Would like any information about Walton family who I’ve managed to trace as far back as 1821. My great great grandparents used to run the Welsh Harp until 1942 (Ralph and Sarah-Jane). Anyone in Trimdon who remembers them? My great aunt Annie Walton had a shop on Northside Terrace too. Any information or memories welcome.

You may have seen my old posts regarding my attempts to trace relatives of Sgt George Marshall of Trimdon, killed during WWII whilst serving with the RAF. Just noticed all of these posts from Canada and I was wondering if any of you are related to the Marshall family from Trimdon. Apparently George had a daughter who emigrated to Canada and I was wondering if there was any connection.
Thanks, Jim

I would just like to let everyone know how proud I am of my Dad, Mr. Bill Robson, of Trimdon Village. He is 80 years old and has just passed his GCSE in Art. Something that he never got the chance to do when he was younger. So if you see him sitting at his front door or up at the Village club, shake his hand and tell him Congratulations. We are all Very proud of him.

Hi, Im doing family research on my Ramshaws who came to Trimdon 1861 census and stayed there. My great grandad John henry ramshaw- known as ralph sometimes i think moved to station town early 1900s when he married Lucy Reed.Lucy was the daughter of Squire Reed who also settled in trimdon- coming from yorkshire.
I see ther are loads of ramshaws in trimdon through the 1800s and i am busy trying to work out relations. The Soulsbys seem to feature in my family tree and there is a Henry Ramshaw in every generation.- My dad is Henry ramshaw- known as Harry, born station town 1931.
If anyone has any comments i would love to hear frrom you.

Congratulations on a great site! I recently visited Trimdon to try to find the house in which my mother was born in 1914. I was only there for a day, but everyone was so kind and helpful (as Geordies are) that I just wanted to say thanks, especially to Peggy? (I think that was her name) who works at the local newsagents/store. She found an old timer who was born in the same year as my mam and he gave directions to a place alongside the old Trimdon Grange pit (which now of course is just a field). My mam’s name is Violet Eleanor Harvey. She died in Southampton, UK in 1982. She was born on July 6, 1914 at 17 Overmans Row, Trimdon, the daughter of Fred Allen Newton (who was a banksman at the colliery) and Margaret Mary Ann Robinson Newton (late Ashcroft, formerly French). If anyone has any further info on my mam’s family or the exact location of Overmans Row/or maps/photos showing it, I would be very grateful.

I’m trying to trace any surviving relatives of Sgt George Marshall, who was killed on 1st March 1943 whilst serving with the RAF.
George is buried in Trimdon Grange Cemetery and his parents were James and Alice Marshall, of Trimdon Village.
I am part of a group researching wartime aircraft accidents and George’s aircraft is one of them, having crashed onto remote moorland near Bellingham, Northumberland.
The remains of the aircraft are hopefully going to be excavated later this year and are to go on display at the North East Aircraft Museum in Sunderland. It is also hoped that a memorial will also be erected near the crash site.
I look forward to any replies.
Yours, Jim Corbett

Hi Guys,
me again, as there was a little bit of confusion as to the time i post messages and my personal history, here is a quick bio.
Formaly from Trimdon, worked in construction, went to peterlee college at 28 years old, studied electronics, emmigrated to British Columbia canada, 15 years ago, back to school, now an electrician. Wife Anne manages a store, daughter at college and a world travler.
We live in Coquitlam, a native named city, a suburb of Vancouver, BC , In the fraser river valley, very mild weather, surrounded by mountains , it rains a lot! BC’ers are pretty laid back, the hippies of canada.
We miss Co Durham, England, Trimdon….. we come over for a visit every two years, read the northen echo on the net and the trimdon Times every day. Modern BC is only 130 years old so we have no visible history, our native people built of wood which rots pretty fast in a rain forest. We miss english pubs, humor. Watch coronation st. on tv.
Hope I’m not boring ya, if anything interseting is happening I will post it, forgive the grammer , I majored in electricity , not english.
regards george
Love to hear from people in our old haunts, reading the guest book the kids are just as crazy as we were .

HI guys , you have me all freaked out now, Cheech n’ Chong, two hippy pot heads from the 70’s. My humor is in the traditional north east style, earthy with a play on words, funnier when it’s spoken, comes from working in heavy industry. Americans on the otherhand prefere slapstick, visual humor.
just a thought Trimdon “village ” is over a thousand years old, were are all of the bodies…. think about it! this is a serous thought

You guys are making this a very interesting site, keep it up.And don’t hold it against anyone cos they don’t have the great fortune to come from Trimdon. Home of Peter Lee, MP Tony ##### Blair. I was born and bred in Trimdon,Lived at Coronation Terrace, Deaf Hill. Went to Colliery school then to Trimdon Modern at the village. I found this site when looking for interesting items for my mum who was 85 on Saturday 21st May…everybody in Trimdon knew her as Eileen Carter. Dennis Jordan is a relation, John Carr lived down the road from me, Peter Eadsforth lived in the Foundry…I could write a book!!! Does anybody know me? Motorbike’s, Santi’s cafe at Fishburn..give me a shout ! Anybody remember Billy Walton racing his Manx Norton ?

for everyone in Trimdon, no one is stuck in Trimdon in this day and time, just go for it!
And by the way once you leave you may find there is a lot you will miss about the old place. I grew up in Trimdon in the days when there was a lot of outdoor adventure, the quarries , woods , fields and becks and no vidio games…… we also got drunk, but went home without a fuss…..or you got barred and yer backside kicked. enjoy where you
live . regards from sunny bc, the garden is dying in April cos it’s so hot! not good…GLOBAL WARMING!!!!

I havn’t heard the “colliery clock ” for a while either, mind you it would have to be pretty loud to hear it here. When we were kids we relied on the chimes to tell the time from the fox cover or over the fields, the ” grange rec”……glad to know it’s back

Please can anyone help me – I’m trying to get some info on my son James Wood who lives at The Fox and Hounds. His mum and I split up in 2000 and she did a good job turning him against me and as such I have not seen him for 3 years. This is the 1st time I have had any chance of getting to find out anything about him. All correspondence will of course be treated with the strictest of confidence and be greatly appreciated. I can be contacted via e-mail at mattsuenchaz@aol.com or my mobile 07813 250 722. Many thanks, Matthew Wood

Hi I am researching my family history, my grandfather ( Henry Preece ) was born in Railway street Trimdon Foundry in 1903, I was wondering if anyone can tell me where it was situated. I know where the foundry fish shop is and wanted to try and get my bearings in relation to that and the old Doggetts building is it somewhere near that . Great pictures on the web site keep it up
